Missing Sylhet councillor found tied up under bridge on highway

The ward councillor of Zakiganj municipality in Sylhet, who went missing four days ago, was found yesterday morning from under a bridge on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Bariura area of Sarail in Brahmanbaria.

Shahab Uddin Tapadar Shakil's hands and legs were tied with ropes when locals found him and informed police, Mofiz Uddin Bhuiyan, officer-in-charge of Sarail Police Station said.

Councillor Shakil, also convenor of Zakiganj town Jubo League, went traceless after he left home around 10:00pm on Friday.

“He managed to write his name 'Shakil' in a piece of paper to identify himself becoming unconscious again, after police rescued him,” the OC said, adding that he has been admitted to Sarail Upazila Health Complex.

Habibur Rahman Hawladar, officer-in-charge of Zakiganj Police Station, said they have already been informed of the matter, and a team of police has been sent to Sarail to bring him back to Sylhet.

Police still could not find what happened to the missing councillor, but said they were investigating the matter.

Shakil's brother Nazrul Islam, also an Awami League leader of the upazila, earlier told The Daily Star that Shakil told his family that he was going to attend an arbitration meeting, and did not return home that night.

On Saturday afternoon, Islam filed a general diary with Zakiganj Police Station in this regard.
