Man sentenced to life-term for rape

A tribunal in Chattogram yesterday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a girl six years ago.

The convict is Nazrul Islam, 35, from Mirsarai upazila.

Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Mutahir Ali passed the verdict after the court found him guilty beyond doubt, said Advocate MA Naser, public prosecutor of the tribunal.

Naser said the tribunal additionally fined the convict Tk 50,000 and also sentenced him to 10 more years of imprisonment for provoking the girl to commit suicide after rape.

Apart from that, the tribunal acquitted five other accused as the charge brought against them were not proven, said Naser.

The prosecutor said after the verdict, the court sent the convict to jail.

According to the case statement, on February 5, 2013, Nazrul, a farm owner, raped Rozina Akhter, 17, domestic help of one Rabiul Hossen, at his farm. The girl took her life the same night at Rabiul’s house.

After the incident, police filed an unnatural death case while the rape incident came to light after autopsy.

A court framed charges against six after police pressed the charges on October 21, 2014.

4 GET LIFE-TERM FOR GANG RAPE IN N’GANJ

A Narayanganj court yesterday sentenced four men to life imprisonment and fined them Tk 1 lakh each for gang-raping a girl on March 15, 2010.

The convicts are Shahidul, 30; Shakil, 28; Chanchal, 31; and Arif, 30.

Only Chanchal was present before the court, as the others are on the run.

Judge Md Shahin Uddin of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal declared the verdict.

Public prosecutor Rakibuddin Ahmed said as per the case statement, the convicts abducted a 14-year-old girl on her way home from work, and raped her.
