Man sent to jail for raping seventh-grader

Police yesterday arrested a fisherman on charges of raping a seventh-grader at Sea Beach area under Halishahar Police Station of the port city on December 9.

The arrestee, Biplob Das (35), hails from the fishermen’s colony of Ananda Bazar, said police.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Md Kamruzzaman of Chattogram Metropolitan Police said the accused gave a confessional statement before Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnaz Rahman, admitting his crime.

After recording his statement, the court sent the accused to jail, the ADC said.

The victim also gave a statement before the magistrate under section 22  of Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, said the ADC.

The victim’s mother had filed the case with Halishahar Police Station after the incident.

“After rape, the criminals snatched the victim’s cell phone, but she hid the information in the case statement.”

“During investigation, she disclosed the information, and police used the lead to arrest Biplob, and recovered the phone,” added the ADC.

OC Obaidul said, “We got information about the other rapist, and are trying to arrest him.”

“After medical tests, we confirmed that the girl was raped,” added the OC.
