Man ‘kills daughter, stabs son then tries to take his own life’

A man allegedly stabbed his two children, killing his daughter, and then tried to take his own life at their residence in Hazaribagh area of the capital yesterday.

Roza (6) died of her wounds while her father Mohammad Jabed (40), and brother Rijon (14) were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost. 

Rijon had wounds to his neck and hands.

The incident took place in Battala Mazar area of ​​Hazaribagh around 3pm.

"Primarily, we came to know that the man was in financial distress over a loan," Sub-inspector Jahangir Alam Sohag of Hazaribagh Police Station, told The Daily Star at DMCH. "We will know the exact reason after talking to Jabed," he said.

Rijon's uncle Mehedi said the family had a tin-shed two-storey house where Jabed lived on the first floor. He had a small shop on the ground floor. Mehedi said Jabed's wife was on the ground floor at the time of the incident. She heard screams coming from the upper floor and rushed there. Upon entering, she found the three on the floor with stab wounds to the neck.

They were rushed to DMCH, where Roza was declared dead.

Sajidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hazaribagh Police Station, said they learnt about the matter from the hospital and sent a team there.
