Man gets 12 years for yaba peddling

A Chattogram court yesterday sentenced a man to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for peddling 500 yaba pills.

The case against the man -- Ziaur Rahman, 30, from Kutupalong, Teknaf -- was filed with Sadarghat Police Station in 2016.

The convict, however, went into hiding after he was released from jail following bail.

Abdul Halim, acting judge of Chattogram Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal, delivered the verdict after Ziaur's conviction was proven beyond doubt before the court, said Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Mohammed Ayub Khan.

According to the case statement, police arrested Ziaur with 500 yaba pills in his possession in the city's Sadarghat area on May 26, 2016 and filed a case later against him with Sadarghat Police Station.

Police submitted charge sheet implicating Ziaur a few days later.
