Mahbubey Alam laid to rest

With love, respect and grief, people from all walks of life yesterday bade farewell to Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, an eminent jurist.

The country's top law officer was laid to rest at the capital's Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard around 1:20pm, Mahbubey Alam's son Sumon Mahbub told The Daily Star.

Earlier, his coffin was kept on the Supreme Court Bar Association premises for around two hours from 11am when SC judges, former judges, lawyers, law officers, government high officials, political leaders, educationists, professionals and Mahbubey Alam's family members paid their last respects.

His namaz-e-janaza was held there.

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Law Minister Anisul Huq, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim, Railways Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, judges of the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court, former Appellate Division judges Justice AHM Shamuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Md Nizamul Huq, Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, SCBA President AM Amin Uddin, Inspector General of Police Dr Benzir Ahmed, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam, Peshjibi Samannay Parishad President AFM Mesbahuddin and its Organising Secretary Advocate Motaher Hossain Sazu joined the janaza and paid tribute to Mahbubey Alam by placing wreaths.

Additional attorney generals Murad Reza, Momtaz Uddin Fakir and SM Munir, former SCBA presidents and secretaries, deputy attorney generals and assistant attorney generals, and SCBA Secretary Ruhul Quddus Kazal, leaders of Ainjibi Parishad, Mahbubey Alam and Associates, prosecutors of International Crimes Tribunal, leaders of Bangladesh Athletics Association, Mahila Parishad and Law Reporters Forum were also among others.

Besides, wreaths were placed on behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in honour of Advocate Mahbubey Alam.

Yesterday morning, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain announced general holiday for both the Appellate and High Court Divisions to pay tribute to the jurist.

Mahbubey Alam breathed his last at 7:25pm on Sunday while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka. He had been receiving treatment there since September 4 after being infected with Covid-19. He was taken to the ICU on September 18 after his health condition suddenly deteriorated.

Advocate Mahbubey Alam was appointed as the attorney general of the state on January 13, 2009. At the same time, he also performed as the ex-officio chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council.
