Lighter Vessel Capsize: All 12 crew members rescued

A lighter vessel carrying 940 tonnes of chickpea to Khulna from Chattogram capsized at the Bay of Bengal yesterday morning.All 12 crew members of "MV Golam Rahman" were rescued by the staff of another lighter vessel, while the ship master managed to run the vessel aground to a submerged land mass near Patenga beach.

Vessel master Golam Rahman told The Daily Star that the vessel loaded with chickpea worth Tk 2.84 crore, imported by Rubi Foods Products group, left Ghat-15 of Karnaphuli River at 7am for Khulna.

After an hour of journey, it was hit by another lighter vessel, around 5 nautical miles from Patenga, he said.

Ataul Karim, general secretary of BIWTA, said Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard members are trying to rescue the vessel and goods.
