Jucsu polls likely by November: VC

The Jahangirnagar University authorities have finally initiated to hold the long-pending Jucsu election in face of students’ demand.

Vice Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam on Friday announced to form an Election Commission within next month when different student bodies took position in front of the senate building before its 38th annual meeting.

“We’ll hold the [Jucsu] election. We are not being ‘whimsical’ about it. The polls may be held by November this year,” she said.

On Thursday, JU formed a 12-member committee, headed by Treasurer Prof Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq, to discuss the polls with student organisations.

Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Cultural Alliance and Quota reformists welcomed the initiative. JU unit of BCL also hailed the decision while Chhatra Dal demanded coexistence on campus.

Most senate members also welcomed the decision.

Meanwhile, on Friday night, JU authorities announced Tk 259.97 crore budget for the fiscal 2019-20, allocating only Tk 3 crore or 1.15 percent for research. Teachers and students termed it “insignificant”.
