Jubo Dal Man Murder: Charges pressed against 18

Police yesterday pressed charges against 18 people in a murder case of Jubo Dal leader Harunur Rashid Chowdhury, who was shot dead in front of his transport office in city's Kadamtali Bus Stand area on December 3 last year.

“Police submitted the charge sheet to prosecution implicating 18 persons,,” Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nezam Uddin of Sadarghat Police Station told The Daily Star.

Among the 18 accused, three accused are on the run since the incident, said the OC.

Police said transport businessman Harun was shot dead due to the rivalry that ensued over commission money of transport brokers at Kadamtali-Shuvopur bus stand area.

Harun was shot dead by six to seven youths from a procession organised by Sadarghat thana Jubo League and Awami League, to celebrate the Unesco's recognition of historic March 7 speech of the Father of the Nation on December 03.

After the murder, family members, co-workers and business leaders alleged that the extortionists plotted the murder to take revenge and establish supremacy on transport business as Harun, the owner of ST Transport, had taken a firm stance against the extortion of BCL men from the transport businessmen.

Harun's elder uncle Dastigir Chowdhury was a leader of BNP while his younger uncle Jahangir Chowdhury is the president of Sadarghat thana AL.
