JU files case against 50 students
Authorities allege they attacked assistant proctor
A case was filed against at least 50 “unnamed” students of Jahangirnagar University on Friday night for allegedly attacking an assistant proctor on campus during the strike, demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam from her post.
On behalf of the university administration, JU Chief Security Officer Sudipto Shaheen filed the case with Ashulia Police Station.
The university filed the case after protesters raised allegation against JU Assistant Proctor Mohibur Rouf Shaibal, saying he along with some students, assaulted two of the protesters during the strike on Wednesday.
The two protesters are Nazir Amin Chowdhury Joy, president of JU Student Union, and Camelia Sharmin Chura. They also submitted written complaints to the university proctor seeking justice.
The protesters termed the case against them “deceptive and fabricated”.
Professor Rayhan Rhyne, convener of Jahangirnagar Against Corruption said, “We have seen the CCTV footage of the incident and we found the reality to be contradictory with what the authority has said in the case.”
“The university administration is just trying to harass us [protesters] through this case. We must resist this. We will continue our protest,” he added during a press briefing on campus.
Meanwhile, JU teachers yesterday sought intervention of the president, also the chancellor of the university, to resolve the ongoing crisis as students are observing an indefinite strike, demanding resignation of the VC for her alleged involvement in graft.
They issued a notice in this regard, which was signed by President of JU Teachers’ Association Dr Ajit Kumar Majumder and Secretary Prof Md Sohel Rana.
“The teachers’ association is aggrieved by the ongoing crisis,” the notice said. ‘’We’ve taken a decision to seek intervention of the chancellor to improve the situation,” it added.
A section of teachers and students have been staging demonstration on the campus demanding VC’s removal since September 18, while the all-out strike began on October 28.
