'Hurting Religious Sentiment'

JP leader sued

Jatiya Party leader Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, also a former mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), was sued yesterday for allegedly hurting religious sentiment of the Hindu community.

Swapan Das, joint convener of Banshkhali Upazila Puja Udjapan Parishad, filed the case under section 298 with Banshkhali Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court of Mainul Islam, said advocate Nurul Absar, the complainant's lawyer.

The court in its order asked the officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station to investigate into the accusation and submit a report before the court by December 3, the lawyer added.

Swapan told The Daily Star that on October 18, during the Durga Puja, the JP leader Mahmudul during his visit to a puja mandap -- at Pashchim Chechuria Shilpara of Tetulia village under Bailchhari union -- made comments that hurt religious sentiment.
