Journos should voice voters' aspirations

Speakers say at workshop on election reporting in Mymensingh

Rather than acting as messengers, journalists need to play the role of a watchdog, voicing the aspirations of voters for a free fair and credible election, speakers said at a workshop for journalists yesterday.

It is essential that the journalists maintain neutrality and professionalism in the upcoming general election, they also said.

Attended by around 40 journalists from the print and electronic media, the workshop on election reporting was organised by Mymensingh Press Club at its auditorium.

Speakers at the workshop included Golam Mustafa, additional regional election officer; Joyita Shilpi, additional superintendent of police in Mymensingh; Jilhaz Uddin Nipun, senior trainer of Press Institute of Bangladesh; and Ali-r-Raji, assistant professor of communication and journalism department at Chittagong University.

Issues related to investigative reporting on election, electoral rules, election reporting before and after election, and the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) in the upcoming election were discussed at the workshop.

The concluding session was presided over by Dr Subhas Chandra Biswas, deputy commissioner of Mymensingh.
