The High Court yesterday denied bail to Chattogram Central Jail's suspended jailer Sohel Rana Biswas, who was arrested last October with nearly Tk 3 crore in FDRs and cash and bottles of contraband Phensedyl.

The bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam also issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks as to why bail should not be granted to Sohel in the money laundering case filed against him.

The HC bench issued the rule after hearing a bail petition filed by Sohel.

On October 27, Sohel was arrested on the Bijoy Express train while he was on way to his hometown in Mymensingh from Chattogram.

Searching Sohel's belongings, police recovered fixed deposit receipts (FDRs) worth around Tk 2.50 crore, Tk 44.43 lakh in cash and 12 bottles of Phensedyl.

Police later filed two separate cases with Bhairab Railway Police Station against Sohel under the Money Laundering Act and Narcotics Control Act, he said, adding that in January, Sohel filed a petition with the HC, seeking bail in the money laundering case.

Advocate Adnan Rafique represented Sohel in the hearing yesterday.
