Injured by rivals, youth dies at CMCH

A youth died while undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) yesterday, a day after he got injured during a clash between two groups in port city's Jhautola area over collecting extortion money.

The deceased is Abdus Sukkur, 22, a resident of Jhautola Bihari Colony.

During the clash, seven others also got injured and were admitted to CMCH.

Around 11:00pm on Friday, the clash broke out in Dakkhin Khulshi area, said OC Sheikh Nasir Uddin of Khulshi Police Station.

Both the youth groups are loyal to the local ward councillor, said police.

“There was a longstanding rivalry between them over collecting extortion money from construction material-laden trucks and establishing supremacy in the area,” said Sub-inspector Nur Uddin, second officer of the police station.

“On the night, the clash triggered centring collecting extortion money from a brick-laden truck,” he added.

At one point, Sukkur and other members of his group were beaten up by their rivals, said the SI, adding that two members of the rival group were also injured. The body was handed over to his family after an autopsy, said the SI.
