HSTU admission test postponed

Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU) postponed the admission test at its academic council meeting on Sunday night after a row over suspension of two teachers.

It was decided after a group of teachers staged a demonstration on the campus demanding suspension of two teachers for allegedly assaulting the registrar.

The examinations were scheduled to begin on December 10.

As many as 1.25 lakh and 83 students filed their registration to take part in the admission test.

Mohsin Ali, assistant professor of Department of Chemistry, and Abu Bakkar Siqque, assistant professor of Electric and Communication Engineering Department, were suspended on Sunday.

Earlier, a group of teachers known as supporters of the vice chancellor formed a human chain on the campus demanding expulsion of the two teachers for assaulting the registrar at his office on November 29.

The incident of assaulting the registrar was also uploaded in social media.

Meanwhile, protesting the suspension, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists confined Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abul Quashem to his office for two hours.

Later, police rescued Prof Quashem.

On the other hand, the general students formed a human chain demanding restoration of proper educational atmosphere at the university. 

The students told this correspondent that their teachers are divided into two groups -- one led by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Abul Quashem and the other led by former vice-chancellor Prof Ruhul Amin.

They alleged that their studies are being badly hampered for several months as two teachers' groups have been agitating for long demanding expulsion of teachers involved with sexual harassment of two students.
