High achievers of Cambridge exams lauded

Forty-eight English medium students, who won "Top in the World" awards in this year's Cambridge examinations in June, received accolades for their academic results at a ceremony yesterday.

The students, from 13 different schools, achieved the highest marks in the world in a range of individual subjects in Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), Cambridge O-level, and Cambridge International AS- and A-level exams.

The ceremony was jointly hosted by Cambridge International and British Council, Bangladesh, at the International Convention City, Bashundhara in the capital. At the ceremony, 35 students were also recognised for achieving "Top in Country" awards in the exams. Organisers said 98 Bangladeshi students received “Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards”.

"Top in the World" and "Top in Country" awards are parts of “Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards”, according to the website of Cambridge Assessment International Education.

Addressing the ceremony, Brac Founding Chairperson Sir Fazle Hasan Abed hoped that students who have done “exceedingly well” in the exams would have the opportunity to enroll in some of the world's best universities.

He suggested attending students to come out of the universities with good moral values, to not only to serve themselves but the society.

“I hope some of you will come back and become part of Bangladesh's development and progress, and not remain outside just looking after your own wellbeing,” he added.

British Council Acting Director Andrew Newton, British Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh Kanbar Hossein-Bor, and Cambridge International's South Asian Director Ruchira Ghosh, among others, spoke.
