Ctg Doctor’s Death

Govt seeks stay on wife’s bail order

The government yesterday filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking stay on the High Court’s bail to Tanzila Haque Chowdhury Mitu in a case filed for provoking suicide.

The government said in the petition that Mitu’s extramarital affairs provoked her husband Mustafa Murshed Akash to take his own life, and therefore, she cannot be granted bail in the case.

A chamber judge of the Appellate Division will hear on the stay petition on September 9, Deputy Attorney General KM Zahid Sarwar told The Daily Star.

Akash, 32, a doctor of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, died allegedly by suicide at his residence in Chandgaon in the port city on January 31, after he posted a “suicide note” on his Facebook timeline.

Counter Terrorism unit of Chittagong Metropolitan Police arrested Mitu from a relative’s house in Nandankanan the same night.

Akash’s mother Jobeda Khanam filed a case the following day, accusing Mitu and five others for instigating the suicide.

Following a petition filed by Mitu, the HC on August 28 granted permanent bail to her in the case.

Mitu’s lawyer Advocate AM Aminuddin told The Daily Star that he did not know whether his client got released from jail following the HC judgement.
