Govt to give 'Mother of Humanity Award'

The cabinet has approved the “Mother of Humanity Award” policy, under which the government would give the award to deserving individuals or organisations on National Social Welfare Day every year.

The approval was given at the weekly meeting of the cabinet, held at the secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair yesterday.

The award will be conferred on the recipients on January 2 every year, marking the day, Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam said while briefing reporters after the meeting.

Under the policy, the award would be given to individuals/organisations in five categories every year for their role in the welfare of poor, marginalised and elderly persons, including the oppressed and divorced women, children and persons with disabilities.

Each recipient will get a gold medal, a replica of the actual award, a cheque for Tk 2 lakh and a certificate.

Two committees will select the awardees. One will be at district level headed by the deputy commissioners and the other at central level headed by the most senior cabinet member.

At the meeting, the cabinet also approved a proposal of the ICT Division to declare the 3rd Phase of Info-Govt project as a national priority project.

The project has been undertaken to provide internet services at union levels, maintaining sustainable internet infrastructure, replacement, operation and settlement of revenue sharing issues.
