Govt to construct outer ring road around Dhaka

To ease Dhaka’s traffic jam, the government will start construction of a 48km outer ring road around the city in 2020 under a government-to-government initiative with Japan.

The cabinet committee on economic affairs yesterday at a meeting approved a proposal to this end which will be implemented under the public private partnership (PPP) initiative.

After the meeting, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said 134km road will be constructed under the project.

The committee approved the construction of 48km in the first phase which will cost about Tk 10,200 crore, he said.

The government will implement the project with assistance from the Japanese government, said the minister.

According to the project proposal, the construction will start in 2020 and end in 2023.

Yesterday, the cabinet committee also approved the purchase of 20 lakh machine-readable passport (MRP) booklets and 20 lakh lamination foils at a cost of Tk 41 crore.
