Govt can't release anyone on parole if it's not sought

Law Minister Anisul Huq yesterday said the government cannot release anyone from jail on parole if it is not sought.

“One has to seek parole through filing an application for release from jail,” he said at his secretariat office while responding to reporters when asked about the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on parole.  

On June 14 last year, the law minister had ruled out Khaleda's parole. He told The Daily Star that “If Khaleda Zia is released from jail on parole, it will be a serious breach of the Jail Code.”

On June 13, 2018, Khaleda Zia's lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain at a press conference urged the government to release her from jail on parole, on humanitarian ground, for better treatment.
