Governance to be decentralised by 2041: PM at JS

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday told parliament that the country’s governance system will be decentralised by 2041, as the country will turn into a developed one by then.

She said this while replying to a tabled question from treasury bench lawmaker M Abdul Latif (Chattogram-11).

“Bangladesh will be a peaceful, prosperous and developed country by 2041, implementing Vision-2041, which can be compared to the developed world. The governance system of Bangladesh will be decentralised by this time,” PM said in a scripted answer. 

“The lion’s share of government expenses will be implemented at the local level, and local administration will carry out the responsibility (of expending government funds). The plans will be designed with clear coordination between the local and central administration,” she added.

Mentioning that the economy of Bangladesh stands strong overall, the leader of the House said investment is increasing gradually and the balance of payment of Bangladesh remains in good position due to high growth in export and remittance.

She also said inflation is under control while budget deficit is within five percent of Gross Domestic Product.

In this context, it can be expected that the economic growth will accelerate further in the days to come, she said.

“Bangladesh will turn into a developed nation with US$ 16,000 per capita income, and poverty will be a matter of distant past in this Shonar Bangla (Golden Bangla) in 2041,” said Hasina. According to the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2019 of the UN, Bangladesh was one of the top 10 growing economies in the world in 2018, she said.
