Gonotantra Mukti Dibas today

Day marks fall of autocratic leader in 1990

“Gonotantra Mukti Dibas” [Freedom of Democracy Day] will be observed in the country today, marking the fall of autocratic ruler HM Ershad in 1990.

On the eve of the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued a message, greeting the people.

“It is a significant day in the history of restoring democracy,” she said.

“We struggled for long to restore democracy and voting rights of the people. The people of the country had joined the movement spontaneously,” the premier said.

Recalling the supreme sacrifice of many democracy-loving people, including Noor Hossain, Babul, Fattah, Dr Milon, Hasina said the autocratic ruler was forced to bow down following a mass-movement.

“Let’s build a hunger and poverty free and prosperous ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation, by making the foundation of democracy stronger and working together for development of the country and welfare of its people,” she added.

Different political, social and cultural organisations have chalked out various programmes marking the occasion.
