Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary celebrated

The 150th birth anniversary of India’s founding father Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated in Sylhet yesterday.

Marking the day, Assistant High Commission of India in Sylhet organised a programme at the gymnasium of Abul Maal Abdul Muhith Krira Complex.

Parliamentarian Mohibur Rahman Manik was present as the chief guest while Assistant High Commissioner of India Shri Krishnamurthy was present as moderator of the programme.

At the event, a portrait of Gandhi done by sixth-grader Aninda Kundo of Jalalabad Cantonment Public School and College was unveiled.

Mohibur Rahman said, “Gandhi was a victim of racism when he was in South Africa, but he fought against racism all his life.”

Subroto Chakroborty, commander of Sylhet Muktijoddha Sangsad; Dr Arman Ahmed Shiplu, deputy director of Ragib-Rabeya Medical College and Hospital; and Swami Chandranathanand Maharaj, principal of Ramakrishna Mission, spoke at the programme.
