A crocodile was found in a private pond in Rajshahi on Sunday.

Locals first noticed the crocodile at 10:30am in the waterbody at Miapur village in Charghat upazila, said fire service.

On information from them, they rushed to the spot and tried in vain to catch the reptile with fishing net, said Jahirul Islam, in-charge of Charghat Fire Station.

Later in the afternoon, they pumped out the water and caught the animal, following directives of the upazila nirbahi officer and local public representatives, he said.

The pond is near the river Padma and the crocodile might have travelled to the waterbody by itself, Jahangir Kabir, inspector of wildlife section of forest department in Rajshahi region, told The Daily Star yesterday.

The crocodile of freshwater species -- 8-foot in length and 65kg in weight -- was brought to Rajshahi Wildlife Rescue Centre, said Jahangir.

It will be transferred to Bangabandhu Safari Park in Gazipur today, he added.
