Food minister's son-in-law dies

Dr Rajan Karmakar, son-in-law of Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, died early yesterday, triggering a family feud. His uncle filed a complaint of “mysterious death” and demanded police investigation.

Around 4am yesterday, he was taken unconscious from his Indira road residence to the capital's Square Hospital, where the doctors declared him “brought dead”.

Rajan, 39, is an assistant professor of the Faculty of Dentistry at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) and husband of minister's daughter Dr Krishna Rani Mazumder, also an assistant professor of the same university.

Jan-e-alam Munsi, officer-in-charge of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, told The Daily Star, “Maternal uncle of the deceased Sujon Karmaker filed a written complaint to us, regarding the cause of death. We have sent the body to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for autopsy.”

Police is looking into the matter and filing of a case in this regard was under process, according to Munsi.

Doctors at Square Hospital informed journalists that they found no sign of injury in Rajan's body.

Talking to the newspaper, Sujon Karmaker said, “They [in-laws' family] are claiming Rajan died after falling sick; but his wife herself is a physician. So what treatment did she give to him? We have suspicion over his death. They had been going through conjugal feud since their marriage in 2016.”

A colleague of Rajan told The Daily Star, “As allegations have arisen, we want autopsy to know the actual reason behind his death.”

Meanwhile, Krishna Rani Mazumder and Sadhan Chandra Majumder have both been admitted to Square Hospital after the death of Rajan. The Daily Star couldn't reach them for their comments in this regard.
