Fight with classmate leaves 8th-grader dead

An eighth-grader died on Thursday after getting involved in a fight with his classmate at a school in Fenchuganj upazila of Sylhet. 

The deceased is Majedul Islam, 13, son of Altoma Ali of the upazila.

Quoting students, police said after the afternoon tiffin break was over, students were returning to class. At that time, Majedul and a classmate locked into an argument over who will sit on the first bench.

At one stage, they started fighting and the other student struck Majedul hard, leaving him  unconscious, they added.

Nearby students called for the teachers, as none were present inside or near the classroom.

After witnessing the incident, the teachers called police, they added.

Majedul was taken to the local health complex where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Police detained the other student the same day and he is currently under their custody, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Special Branch, Md Aminul Islam.

Majedul’s body was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital morgue for autopsy, the additional superintendent said.

Victim’s father filed a case against the student on Thursday night, Aminul Islam added.
