Entrance to fire-ravaged Mirpur building restricted

Entrance to the 10-storey building at Dhaka’s Mirpur-14, where a fire originated yesterday, has been restricted by the law enforcers as “the building is under fire risk”.

The fire on the sixth floor of “Khan Mansion & City Park” was doused around 10:00pm after five-hour of frantic efforts of 15 firefighting units, fire service control room said.

Police officials still cordoned off the area and kept entry restricted to the upper floors of the building as it is risky to go there, according to sources from the control room.

They, however, let a shop on the ground floor open in the morning, our correspondent also reports from the spot.

A part of the sixth floor where the fire originated around 5:00pm was severely damaged in the incident, Major Shakil Neowaj Bhuiyan, director (operation and maintenance) of fire service and civil defence told The Daily Star today.

The warehouse was used to store synthetic fabrics and fabric printing materials, as a result of which a lot of smoke was produced, the director said.

The fire was contained on the sixth floor and no harm was noticed on any other floors, especially on the ground floor, said Mahedi Hasan, the manager of the ground-floor shop.

On the other hand, a worker, Md Jashim, at the printing press on the 3rd floor of the building said, he could enter the building to check the shop last night after the fire was doused.

“No material was damaged in our printing press, but there was water on the floor,” Jashim said.
