Ensure capital punishment for Tanjina’s killers

Human chains demand in Thakurgaon, Ctg

People in two districts yesterday demanded justice for nurse Tanjina Akhter, who died on June 27 around a week after she was stabbed by her stalkers in Thakurgaon.

Tanjina, 24, worked at Grameen Eye Hospital in the district.

Following the incident, the family filed a case with Thakurgaon Police Station, accusing one Arman Hossain Jiban and four to five unnamed persons.

Our Chattogram correspondent reports, students of Chattogram Nursing College and activists of Bangladesh Narimukti Kendra, Chattogram formed a human chain at the city’s Prabartak intersection.

Speakers at the event demanded exemplary punishment for all stalkers, rapists and child abusers in the country.

Addressing the event, Romana Akhter, a teacher of the nursing college, said, “Tanjina was killed by stalkers just a month into the killing of nurse Shahinoor Akter Tania in Mymensingh.”

Such incidents are continuously happening in the country, she said, slamming authorities over their “silence”.

Asma Akhter, president of Narimukti Kendra, Chattogram, said women are more vulnerable to being victimised everywhere. She emphasised a stop to all sorts of violence against women.

Mamunur Rashid, general secretary of Students Welfare Association of the nursing college, presided over the event.

Our Thakurgaon correspondent adds, Tanjina’s parents joined a human chain in the town with the same demand.

The human chain followed a discussion where Tanjina’s father Hamid Ali and mother Shahida Begum spoke. They urged law enforcers to discharge duties properly to ensure punishment for the killers.

Earlier in the day, locals brought out a mourning procession in the town under the banner of Thakurgaonbasi.
