Graft Cases

Enamul, Rupon denied bail

The High Court yesterday refused to grant bail to suspended Gendaria Awami league leaders Enamul Huq Enu and his brother Rupon Bhuiyan in two separate corruption cases involving Tk 36 crore.

The court, however, issued two separate rules asking the Anti-Corruption Commission and government to explain in two weeks why Enamul and Rupon should not be granted bail in the cases.

The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Ahmed Sohel came up with the rule following two separate petitions filed by Enamul and Rupon seeking bail in the cases.

Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told The Daily Star that Enamul and Rupon cannot get released from jail following the order.

He said the ACC filed two separate cases with Dhaka office on October 23 last year on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 36 crore beyond known sources of income.

Enamul is accused of amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 21.89 crore while Rupon is accused of amassing illegal wealth worth more than Tk 14 crore, according to the case statements.

On September 24 last year, law enforcers recovered huge amount of cash and gold ornaments from the residences of Enamul and Rupon in Wari. Police arrested Enamul and Rupon on January 13 this year from Keraniganj in connection with the cases.

Lawyer Khurshud Alam Khan represented the ACC while lawyer Syed Mamun Mahbub appeared for Enamul and Rupon.
