An elderly woman was murdered allegedly by her husband at their own flat in Arambagh area of the capital's Motijheel yesterday.

Gopal Chandra Kuri (73) allegedly killed his wife Chhabi Kuri (60) by stabbing her on the head, said Jahidul Islam Shohag, assistant commissioner of Motijheel Division Police.

Based on information from relatives, police recovered the body around 9am, he told The Daily Star.

Chhabi was found on the bed with stab wounds. A knife was also recovered from near her body, said the assistant commissioner. Gopal was found unconscious on the floor, he said.

Police later sent Gopal to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Once Gopal regained senses, he informed police that his wife had been partially paralysed for 12-13 years.

Their three daughters lived abroad, Gopal told police in primary interrogation.

Gopal is the owner of "Kuri and Company Chemical" in Motijheel. For the last two years, he was incurring losses, which made him depressed, said police quoting relatives. Gopal was also under medication, they added.

The elderly couple lived at the flat in a four-storey building by themselves. Chhabi's nephew lived nearby and he used to take care of them, said police.

Gopal told police that they watched television till 1:30am and went to bed.

He apparently had a dream where he "realised" that no one would take care of his wife after his death, said police quoting Gopal.

After waking up, he stabbed his sleeping wife and killer her, law enforcers said, adding that in the morning, Chhabi's nephew came to the flat and informed police.

AC Jahidul Islam said after primary interrogation, they have got some clues that point towards the fact that Gopal may have killed his wife. "We're still investigating the incident to get more details," he added.
