EC to take action if any official found involved: Kabita

The Election Commission (EC) will take action if any of its officials are found involved in issuance of fake NID cards for Rohingyas, said Election Commissioner Kabita Khanam yesterday.

She, however, said she did not think any EC official intentionally issued such national identity cards.

About the Anti-Corruption Commission’s investigation over a missing special laptop which it said was used to load NID data into the EC server, she said the EC has not received any information from ACC yet.

If ACC finds involvement of any EC official, the EC will conduct its own probe and take steps, she told journalists on the sidelines of a meeting with election officials at its Chattogram regional office.

ACC officials on Sunday discovered that a laptop had been missing from the office of Chattogram District Election Officer since 2015, and suspected that it was used for making over 2,000 dubious entries.
