Ducsu polls: ‘Vested quarter spreading misleading information’

Dhaka University (DU) provosts committee today blamed a group of teachers for spreading out misleading information over the recently held Ducsu election and urged the vice chancellor of the university to take measures against them.

The provost committee came up with the demand in a meeting held at the DU Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Akhteruzzaman’s residence this afternoon, said a press release issued by the Public Relations department of the university.

An eight-member teachers’ team of the DU voluntarily observed the March 11 Ducsu election and demanded cancellation of the polls and urged the university authority to announce a fresh election schedule by bringing allegation of irregularities in the election.

The provost committee said the voluntary election observer team entered different polling centres without any permission and dished out misleading information about the election in social and news media.

“The voluntary team has tainted image of the university deliberately by spreading out untrue and misleading information. Their act is totally condemnable,” they said in a statement.

Calling upon the teachers to be more careful about their responsibility, the provost committee said they did not find any irregularities in the voting.

“A group of vested quarter was engaged in creating unrest and volatile situation on the campus, as part of their deep-rooted conspiracy,” the provost committee said in the meeting.

Discussion over different issues including introduction session of the newly elected Ducsu and hall unions leaders their next course of task including oath taking of the newly elected leaders took place in the meeting.

The committee will hold a greeting exchange meeting with the newly elected Ducsu and hall unions leaders on March 23.

Election to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) was after a break of 28 years.

Contestants from several panels except Bangladesh Chhatra League boycotted the polls bringing allegation of irregularities like ballot stuffing and vote rigging.

Nurul Haque Nur, a joint convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad and other panel except the BCL rejected the result and demanded fresh election to the Ducsu.
