DU journalism dept celebrates two outgoing professors

Dhaka University's mass communication and journalism department yesterday bade farewell to two of its teachers who will retire soon.

The department organised a programme on the campus in honour of the outgoing professors -- Akhtar Sultana and  Ahaduzzaman Mohammad Ali.

Kaberi Gayen, chairperson of the department, quoted Akhtar as saying that teaching is not a “part-time” profession, rather it is a noble duty.

The chairperson also said Ahaduzzaman taught many things including “critical schooling”. “These will be exemplary lessons in the days to come.”

Speaking at the programme, Prof Akhtar said relations between teachers and students can be strengthened through assistance and mutual respect.

“Someone will respect us [willingly] -- things are not like that; respect has to be earned. Students are like our children and we should stand by them always. We should understand their problems and help them accordingly, if necessary,” she added.

Prof Ahaduzzaman said, “I do not consider myself a teacher. I have been and will be a student forever… My learning process is still continuing. I learnt… many things from teaching students.”

Clay lamps were lit at the beginning of the programme and Prof Kaberi presented uttoriyo (ceremonial scarf) to the teachers.

Besides, a journal named “Ograyon” comprising 23 articles and two interviews of the professors was launched at the event which was followed by a cultural programme.

DU pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Samad, social science faculty Dean Prof Sadeka Halim, and former chief information commissioner Prof Golam Rahman were also present at the programme.
