DU hall provost resigns amid ‘abuse protest’

The provost of a hall at Dhaka University resigned for “disrespect” after protests flared over an alleged verbal abuse of a student by his son at campus.

Dr Mizanur Rahman, provost of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall, confirmed The Daily Star that he handed his resignation to the vice chancellor.

According to what could be known, his son “verbally abused” a resident student of the university at the Fazlul Huq Hall’s mosque today.

The resident students flared into protests and confined Dr Mizanur Rahman for two hours.

According to what Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports, Dr Mizanur Rahman, former chairman of National Human Rights Commission, resigned alleging “disrespect”.

He alleged that he was “disrespected by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists who are candidates of the upcoming hall students’ council election,” it said.

The president and general secretary of Chhatra League, the student front of ruling Awami League, were also said to have been present at scene.

The Daily Star tried to reach Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman repeatedly through mobile phone, but he could not be reached.
