Dr Monowar Hossain passes away

Dr Monowar Hossain, former chairman of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), passed away at United Hospital in Dhaka on March 4. He was 81.

He left behind a son, a daughter and three grandchildren. His janaza will be held today at 1:30pm after Zohr prayers at Gulshan Azad Masjid. He will be buried at Banani graveyard, says a press release.

Dr Hossain was born in Pabna in September, 1938. In 1953, he stood first in East Pakistan in his matriculation exams. He did his BA Honors in Statistics as a Kali Narayan Scholar in 1959, and his Masters at Dhaka University. He completed his PhD from London School of Economics as part of the first batch of Commonwealth Scholars. He later served as head of Statistics Department of DU.

Dr Hossain worked at the World Bank in Washington, DC from 1970-'75, and was chairman of BIDS between 1975 and 1983.
