DNCC identifies culex mosquito hotspots

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has identified seven wards where density of culex mosquitoes is high.

This was disclosed by DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam yesterday at a press conference held at Nagar Bhaban.

 “We deployed two entomologists and 10 trainees to identify hotspots (breeding grounds) on October 7 and they have identified the hotspots for culex mosquitoes,” said Atiqul.

“We are taking action at the identified breeding grounds to control the culex mosquito population,” he added,

The mayor said they are prepared to check culex mosquitoes and have also taken a yearlong action plan to eliminate any other mosquito, including Aedes.

Density of culex mosquitoes is high at seven wards out of 54 under DNCC, said entomologist DGM Saifur Rahman.

The wards are 20, 28, 11, 5, 31, 32 and 17, he added.

Residents of different areas under both city corporations have been enduring the mosquito menace, with dengue patients still being hospitalised across the country.

Monira Yesmin, a resident of Shankar, said they have seen a rise in culex mosquitoes over the last two weeks. “It’s very difficult to stay at home in the evening without using mosquito repellent or net,” she said.

Chief Health Officer of DNCC, Brig Gen Mominur Rahman Mamun, said they were starting a two-week crash programme to destroy the mosquito breeding grounds from yesterday.

From now on, ward councilors will be held responsible for mosquito control, cleanliness services or any other public works at their respective areas, he said.

DGHS INCREASES DEATH TOLL

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) yesterday raised their tally of death caused by dengue  to 107, after verifying 171 cases.

According to the DGHS, a total of 236 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country in the last 24 hours till 8am yesterday, of whom 147 were outside Dhaka.

A total of 94,265 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country this year, of whom 48,900 were in Dhaka, according to DGHS.

A total of 930 dengue patients are now undergoing treatment at different hospitals across the country of whom 526 are outside Dhaka.
