DMP terminates 10 cops, suspends 8 for failing drug tests

Dhaka Metropolitan Police authorities have so far terminated 10 policemen for failing drug tests while 8 were suspended.

DMP Deputy Commissioner for Media and Public Relation Walid Hossain today said that 68 of the force have failed in the test, carried out in last few months.

He said that 43 departmental cases were filed against the cops who failed the drug tests. Departmental actions are under process in 25 more incidents.

According to DMP statistics, among the force members who failed the tests, 50 are constables, seven sub-inspectors, a traffic sergeant, and five each Nayek and assistant sub-inspector.

The statistics showed 10 cops of DMP were found accused in drug trade, 10 falsely implicated people in drug cases, five were addicted, and four showed lesser amount of drugs recovery after being bribed.

Earlier in September, DMP commissioner Shafiqul Islam said that they were acting swiftly and strongly against drug dealers and peddlers, including force members involved in drug business

Police personnel involved in drugs will be facing the same consequences. The move will send a clear message to their colleagues, he added.

Police officers since 2019 have to undertake drug tests during recruitments and all unit chiefs of police have the authority to perform test on any police member on suspicion of drug abuse or on the basis of any specific allegation against him or her.

The commissioner also said they were carrying out surveillance on some police members who reportedly have links with drug business.

Shafiqul's announcement came amid growing concern about police's involvement in drug dealings across the country.
