Former chief information commissioner tells conference at CU
Digital journalism has given birth to new techniques of storytelling because journalists now can use technologies to provide a variety of contents such as audio, video, or photo on the same platform, former chief information commissioner Prof Golam Rahman said yesterday.
"Digital journalism represents a revolution of how news is consumed by society,” he said at a conference on “Networking on Digital Journalism Education in Bangladesh: Opportunities and Challenges” at Chittagong University.
In the same breath, the former mass communication and journalism professor of Dhaka University pointed out the challenges. “Online sources are able to provide quick news but it is very challenging to provide accurate and objective news,” he said.
The daylong conference was hosted by the Department of Communication and Journalism of CU with support from Deutsche Welle (DW) Akademie. The participants were academics teaching communication and journalism at public and private universities.
Recently, they have formed a network called “Communication and Journalism Educators Network in Bangladesh” to develop a bridge among the academics.
Speaking as chief guest, CU Vice Chancellor Prof Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury mentioned how traditional media outlets are facing a new challenge in the age of digital journalism.
“As more people consume news online, media organisations face the dilemma of redistributing resources to attract new readers and viewers while still trying to retain their existing, and usually ageing, print or broadcast audiences,” he said.
DW Akademie's South Asia Regional Coordinator Priya Esselborn said their aim is to support the university to develop and strengthen journalism education in Bangladesh, especially in the field of digital journalism.
"We are also providing trainings to university teachers and students on different digital topics so that they can acquire knowledge about digital technologies,” she said.
