Justice for Tania: Nurses demand death for rapists

Nurses yesterday threatened to go for tougher movement if rapists and killers of Shahinoor Akter Tania are not given capital punishment.

Demanding justice for Tania, leaders of Bangladesh Nurses’ Association (BNA) formed a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club.

Speakers there said all those involved should be given exemplary punishment so that no one dares to repeat such brutality.

Tania, a nurse of Ibn Sina Hospital’s Kallyanpur branch, was raped and murdered allegedly on a bus on Monday night, when she was returning home in Kishoreganj’s Katiadi.

Autopsy found evidence that she was gang-raped and murdered, Kishoreganj’s civil surgeon said on Wednesday.

Since the incident, different organisations have held protests across the country, seeking justice for the 24-year-old.

At yesterday’s event, BNA President Kamal Hossen Patwary said they will go for tougher agitation programme if the perpetrators are not given highest punishment.

Its General Secretary Asadujjaman Jewel said the incident is a blow to the existence and dignity of nurses in the country.

President of BNA Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital branch Jorina Khatun said, “We don’t feel safe anywhere, not even at workplaces.”

Nurses and students from various nursing institutions took part in the event.

Participants also urged the authorities concerned to ensure workplace safety for nurses.
