Death of Labannya: Pickup driver gives confessional statement

Anisur Rahman, who was driving the pickup that crushed Fahmida Haque Labannya under its wheels in the capital on April 25, gave confessional statement in the case lodged over the incident yesterday.

Rahman made the statement under section 164 before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sorafuzzaman Ansari, as police produced him before the court after end of his four-day remand.

After recording his statement, the court sent Anisur  to jail.

On May 1, ridesharing motorbiker Sumon Hossain whose bike Labannya was on, made a confessional statement after police produced him before the court after end of his two-day remand.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Baki Billah on April 28 placed Rahman on a four-day remand and Sumon Hossain on a two-day remand in the case.

Labannya, 21, a seventh-semester student at Brac University’s computer science and engineering department, was killed on the spot in the accident in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital. She was on her way to the university from her Shyamoli residence, according to family sources.

Police arrested Sumon from Mohammadpur on April 26, and pickup driver Anisur Rahman from Ashulia the next day.

Law enforcers in primary investigation found that both the biker and the pickup driver were driving indiscriminately on that day, resulting in the tragic death of the girl.
