Death of Abrar: Court orders further investigation

A Dhaka court yesterday ordered further probe into the case filed over the death of Bangladesh University of Professional (BUP) student Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury in a road accident on March 19.

Metropolitan Magistrate Debdas Chandra Adhikary passed the order after Kazi Shariful Islam, inspector of Detective Branch of police, submitted a petition in this regard.

In the petition, he said two charge sheets were submitted to the court on April 25 implicating Suprobhat Paribahan owner and three staffers in connection with the case.

They were charged with the death of Abrar and also for the attempted murder of college girl Synthia Islam Mukta.

But later, the police official found evidence suggesting that more people were involved in the incidents. So further investigation is needed, the petition said.

The accused are: owner of Suprobhat Paribahan Noni Gopal Sarker, bus driver Sirajul Islam, conductor Yasin Arafat and helper Md Ibrahim. All of them are now behind bars.

Detectives pressed charges against Yasir and Gopal in connection with Abrar’s death, while all four were charged-sheeted for attempting to kill Synthia.

On March 19, a bus of Suprobhat Paribahan ran over and killed Abrar near the capital’s Bashundhara Residential Area, after it had hit college student Synthia in Shahjadpur.

Following the incident, Abrar’s father Brig Gen (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury filed a murder case with Gulshan Police Station.
