DBBL awards scholarships to 3,986 students

Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited (DBBL) yesterday at a programme awarded scholarships to 3,986 meritorious and underprivileged students, who passed HSC or equivalent exams last year, and are studying at undergraduate level.

The bank organised the event at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium in the capital's Mirpur. Law Minister Anisul Huq and Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir handed over the scholarships among the students.

Speaking as chief guest, the minister said, “Ensuring quality education for all is our national responsibility.

The government cannot perform the duty alone, so the private sector should come forward.”

“Our goal is to promote Bangladesh to a developed country within 2041. In doing so, quality education is a must. It's the tool for survival in the competitive world,” he said.

“Today's students will lead the country tomorrow… It is our moral responsibility to provide the students with care so that they can flourish,” added Anisul.

Appreciating DBBL's initiative, the minister said such scholarship programme is a unique example of helping the meritorious and poor students. He expected that other institutions would come forward with such endeavour.

He congratulated the awardees and expressed hope that they would dedicate themselves to education and serve the nation.

Sayem Ahmed, chairman of DBBL's board of directors, and Abul Kashem Md Shirin, the bank's managing director, also spoke at the ceremony.

DBBL, under its initiative, has awarded the scholarships among a total of 57,696 students since 1996. Of them, 18,500 students are currently continuing their studies through the scholarship.
