Counterfeiters held for conning drug peddler

Detectives of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police arrested a gang of counterfeit note makers, after they reportedly purchased narcotics with fake notes.

At a press conference yesterday in the office of Detective Branch, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Abu Ahammad Al Mamun said they arrested four persons from the city's Katakhali area on Tuesday night.

They seized counterfeit notes worth Tk 8.12 lakh and note-making equipment from them.

Police officials involved in the drive told this correspondent that the group cheated a drug peddler -- buying narcotics from him with the fake notes.

The drug peddler, who is also accused in a drug-related case, informed the police about the group and law enforcers then set a trap for the gang.

Asked about the information, the Deputy Commissioner of DB, Al Mamun, said it was true.

However, police officials did not elaborate further when asked why action against the drug peddler was not taken.

The arrestees are Insan Islam, 22, who is accused in three drugs-related cases and was once arrested with drugs in October 2015; Jony Hasan, 24; Jony Ali, 26; and Sumon Rana, 27.

A team of detectives led by DB official Al Mamun arrested Jony Ali, Jony Hasan and Insan with 812 counterfeit Tk 1,000 notes near the Subway filling station in Dewanpara area under Katakhali Police Station.

After interrogating them, the DB team raided a house in Horian Poschimpara area under the same police station later that night, and arrested Sumon Rana.

The DB team confiscated a laptop, a printer and paper used for making the counterfeit notes from the house.
