Concerted efforts needed to prevent violence against women: speakers

Collective efforts from all government and non-government organisations are needed to prevent violence against women, stressed speakers at a discussion yesterday.

They also urged all to work towards establishing a society free from exploitation.

The observation came at a daylong meeting on “Child rights and violence against women and establishing women's rights” at the conference hall of Civil Surgeon's Office in Chapainawabganj.

DASCOH Foundation under its “Strengthened Civil Society Protects and Promotes Women's Rights Project” organised the event in association with European Union and Nets Bangladesh.

Speakers at the discussion pointed out that community support is important for establishing rights of women in the society. Contributions of women to different sectors should be recognised and valued.

They also stressed the need for creating awareness in the society to eliminate discriminations and violence against women.

Chapainawabganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) AZM Nurul Haque and Civil Surgeon Dr Khairul Ataturk addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively.

Chief Executive Officer of DASCOH Foundation Akramul Haque chaired the event.

Deputy Director of Department of Social Services Nur Muhammad, Trade Trainer of District Women Affairs Office Sherina Khatun and Research Officer of District Education Office Mesbah Uddin spoke on the occasion as resource persons.

The speakers said various government and non-government organisations are implementing projects and working towards establishing women's rights in the society.

They highlighted initiatives such as prevention of child marriage and violence against women for ensuring gender-equity.

They also put emphasis on responsive support from the community, especially teachers, parents and influential leaders, to ensure women's rights.
