CMP constable sent to jail for possessing 740 pcs of yaba

A Dhaka court yesterday sent Shamsul Islam -- a constable of the  Detective Branch (DB) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police -- to jail for possessing 740 pieces of yaba tablets.

Metropolitan Magistrate Kanak Barua passed the order after Md Towabul  Islam -- sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station and investigation officer (IO) of the case -- produced Shamsul before the court upon completion of his one-day remand.

In the forwarding report, the IO said the arrestee admitted his  involvement in the act. The IO then appealed to the court  to send the constable to jail until the probe is completed.

No lawyer was present to defend Shamsul in the court as he did not appoint one.

Earlier on August 12, Pallabi police arrested Shamsul from Mirpur-7  in the capital while he was engaged in an altercation with a driver in  the area.

Police said they recovered 740 pieces of yaba pills and Tk 26,000 from his possession after searching him in the duty officer's room of Pallabi Police Station.

Shamsul admitted that he, along with several others, brought yaba pills  from Chattogram and sold them in different parts of the capital and had been doing so for a while. Later, a case was filed against Shamsul with Pallabi Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.
