Chinese man held with 28 gold bars

A Chinese national was held with 28 gold bars, weighing over three kgs, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday morning.

Xian Zhu arrived at the airport from Dubai -- on flight Ek582 -- around 11am, hiding the gold bars inside three portable lights, said Shahidul Islam, director general of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).

On information, a CIID team stopped Zhu while he was crossing the green channel. As the officials asked if he was carrying any taxable product, he denied.

Later, his luggage was scanned and metal substances were spotted inside. The official then broke open the portable lights inside his luggage and found gold worth around Tk 1.62 crore, he said. Filing of a case against the Chinese national is underway.
