Two security guards today confessed to two separate magistrates that they strangled Chinese national Jianhui Gao to death in his Banani flat and looted Tk 3.49 lakhs on December 10.

After a four-day police remand, the accused -- Abdur Rauf, 22, of Jhenidah and Enamul Haque, 25, of Narail -- were produced before the chambers of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Md Tofazzal Hossain and Mohammad Jasim separately for recording confessional statements in connection with the murder case.

In their statements, both Rauf and Enamul said they buried the body behind the building to cover up the murder.

Rauf took Tk 1.76 lakh, while Enamul got Tk 1.73 lakh, according to the statements.

Both of them were frustrated seeing the lifestyle of the rich and were looking for a chance to “change their fates”, they said in their statement.

Another Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziaur Rahman also recorded the confessional statement of witness Joy Nandi this noon.

On December 11, police recovered the body of Gao, 47, from the backyard of the building he lived in. Gao used to supply stones and other construction materials to the Padma Bridge and Payra Port projects. He had been living on the sixth floor of 11-storey building for a year.

Gao’s friend Zhang Shu Hong filed a murder case with Banani Police Station against unnamed accused on December 12.

A Dhaka court placed Rauf and Enamul on a four-day remand each, a day after they were arrested from Banani on December 17 in connection with the murder.
