Chattogram slum catches fire

A fire broke out in a slum in Panchlaish area of Chattogram city this morning.

Five units of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence fought the blaze for one and a half hours before bringing it under control around 12:37pm, reports our staff correspondent quoting Toufikul Islam, sub-assistant director of the fire service.

The fire started around 10:30am at Babul Colony which houses around 100 shanties, said Md Abdul Aziz, assistant sub-inspector of Panchlaish Police Station.

Around 30 people sustained minor injuries in the incident, Istakul Islam, a member of a team of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society working there told our correspondent. Among them 16 were given primary treatment, he added.

However, the origin of the fire and the amount of losses could not be known immediately.
