Celebrating mother language through art

Fortnight-long int'l exhibition opens in BSA

Marking International Mother Language Day, an international art exhibition titled Celebrating Mother Language in the Light of Art opened at National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) yesterday.

The fortnight-long exhibition is organised by Artopolitan and BSA in association with The Daily Star, Prothom Alo and Channel i.

The inaugural ceremony honoured noted artist Murtaja Baseer, a Language Movement veteran, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mahfuz Anam,  editor and publisher of The Daily Star, handed him a cheque worth Tk one lakh along with a crest and certificate.

Mahfuz Anam, in his speech, said, “Artists should be shown respect through visiting exhibitions and also through patronage. I request everyone to appreciate artists with sincerity.”

National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest.

The guest panel also included internationally renowned artist Monirul Islam; Director of Asrotex Group Tamanna Tahmina Tanji, and Convener and Creative Director of Artopolitan Tanjila Sumaia Siddiqye.

Artopolitan, an art organisation promoting visual arts and artists of the world, collected artworks from 32 countries.

The exhibition will host 212 works of art, and five of the best works will receive awards.

The exhibition will remain open to all from 11am to 8pm on weekdays and from 3pm to 8pm on weekends till March 9.

The closing ceremony will take place at National Art Gallery Auditorium, BSA at 5:30pm on the final day.

The exhibition has been supported by Mutual Trust Bank Limited, Asrotex Group, Gallery Cosmos, Abinta Kabir Foundation, Hamid Fabrics Limited, Delvistaa Foundation, Dhaka Gallery, and HerStory Foundation.

Member of parliament Asaduzzaman Noor is the chief adviser; while artists Shahabuddin Ahmed and Jamaluddin Ahmed, and thespian Liaquat Ali Lucky are advisers of the organising committee.

The other members of the award jury committee and artworks display committee included artists Professor Mohammad Eunus, Harun Ar Rashid Tutul, Dr Malay Bala, and Zahangir Alom.
