Case filed over attack on Kamal's motorcade

A case was filed yesterday with Darussalam Police Station in Dhaka in connection with the attack on Dr Kamal Hossain's motorcade on December 14.

Abu Bakar Shaju, a Jatiya Oikyafront-nominated candidate from Dhaka-16 constituency, filed the case accusing 12 ruling party men and many unknown persons,  said Selim Uz Zaman, officer-in-charge of Darussalam Police Station.

The case statement said the attack was carried out by Convener of Darussalam Thana Swechchhasebak League unit Md Islam, activists Md Badal, Md Juwel and Md Faruk; President of Darussalam Thana Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) unit Sheikh Rajon and activist Nabil Khan; President of Shah Ali Thana BCL unit Md Jakir, Secretary Saikat, Organising Secretary Mofijul Islam Shuvo, activist Shaon; and Joint Convener of ward-12 Jubo League Md Sohel.

However, police could not arrest anyone till the filing of this report yesterday evening.

Jatiya Oikyafront leader Dr Kamal Hossain's motorcade came under attack near the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in the capital's Mirpur area on Friday. At least 25 people were injured in the attack carried out allegedly by ruling party men around 9:45am, alleged leaders of the opposition alliance. The perpetrators also vandalised seven to eight cars, they said.

The attackers also beat up BNP and Oikyafront leaders and activists who tried to resist them. However, Dr Kamal, also president of Gonoforum, was unhurt.

Armed with rods and sticks, supporters of Aslamul Haque, Awami League candidate for Dhaka-14 constituency, attacked Dr Kamal's car after he entered through the memorial's main gate, said Latiful Bari Hamim, media wing member of the Oikyafront.

Contacted, Aslamul denied the allegation and said the allegation was made as part of a conspiracy against him.
